Arts & Literature: Nantucket Style Book

Save This Article

Liza Gershman and Carrie Nieman Culpepper met at a beautiful dinner party on Nantucket four years ago, and bonded over their desire to celebrate the island with a book about its beachy New England lifestyle.

Liza, an author/photographer, and Carrie, a journalist/brand marketer, both noticed that despite the many books about the island’s illustrious history and it’s beautiful wildness, no book specifically focused on Nantucket’s style, which was at once classic, worldly and bohemian. So they set out to make it happen.

Over the course of the next few years they connected with the fascinating cross section of people who spend time on the island -- including long-time friends and loved ones, and new faces.

This book showcases female entrepreneurs like Tuckernuck founders Maddy and Jocelyn, as well as island fishermen, artists, and boat captains. The featured summer residents have decades-long histories bonding over clambakes and boardgames, a hearty philanthropic community, and strong arts and conservation organizations.

They also got to learn more about the community they already loved, and know the full breadth of a multicultural island whose history was founded with equality in mind. The island continues to employ many workers from overseas, creating a rich tapestry of culture. Many of whom come to love the lifestyle and end up a “washashore.” All of these influences, along with Nantucket’s favorite pastimes of sailing, swimming, surfing, are featured in their new book, NANTUCKET: Classic American style 30 miles out to sea.
