Emily's Country Wedding

Tuckernuck Director of Operations Emily Grayson married Billy Grayson in Upperville Virginia on September 29, 2018. The couple met in high school and began dating after college in 2011. As lovers of the outdoors, the two got engaged while hiking in the Adirondacks and planned their wedding at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. After a summer of rainy weekends, the two lucked out that their early fall wedding was cool and sunny. Here, Emily shares the details of the weekend.

THE INSPIRATION

My husband’s family lives in Upperville, VA on a horse farm that has been in their family since the 1920s. It’s been my favorite place to visit since I was 16. The main house on the farm has a gorgeous front living room/parlor with dark green walls that match the exterior shutters that inspired my entire wedding aesthetic.

REHEARSAL DINNER & WELCOME PARTY

Not only is Red Fox Inn & Tavern a beautiful and historic icon in Middleburg, it has (in my opinion!) the best food! Picking the menu for the rehearsal dinner may have been the most challenging task on my to-do list. I love it all!

GETTING READY

Since it was a country wedding, I wanted a dress with a little bit of lace - but nothing too dressy since the wedding was cocktail attire. I also wore a pair of my mom’s vintage emerald and diamond earrings. They were a last minute add-on for my “something borrowed” but they worked out perfectly and matched my bridesmaids dresses.

THE CEREMONY

My second grade teacher, who also happened to be Billy’s religion teacher and high school lacrosse coach, married us. It was so nice having an officiant who knew us so well. We were married at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville where Billy’s parents got married 30 years prior.

THE RECEPTION

We asked three of my girlfriends who sang acapella in college to perform with our jazz band during cocktail hour. The sang Crazy Love by Van Morrison. It was so special.
We’re big fans of passed apps, so there was an emphasis on that. We also wanted our guests to enjoy the sun setting on the Blue Ridge mountains, so we had an extended cocktail hour for hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

Another highlight of the evening was digging up the bottle of bourbon we had buried 30 days before the wedding. It’s an old Southern tradition that is supposed to bring good weather. Seems to have paid off for us!
Later on in the evening, under the tent, the Waller Family band performed and the dance floor was packed. In hindsight, we could have used a larger dance floor!
