Chanel has a long history of creating designs inspired by a shift in lifestyle. In the 1920s women became more active and wanted their style and clothing to reflect that. Chanel was tired of having t carry her handbag in her arms and through to add a shoulder strap. Historically it was not acceptable for high society women to wear a bag on their shoulders but this new design took well to the market. However, it wasn’t until February 1955 that Chanel successfully launched the infamous 2.55. The 2.55 was named after the date it was released, and many details of its design are inspired by Coco Chanel’s young life and her upbringing in a convent.
